8TV shutdown transmission for Earth Hour Campaign

Being a media company that asserts and supports environmental efforts, 8TV has taken the necessary measures to support and be part of the global movement - Earth Hour. Earth Hour, which will take place on 28 March 2009, 8.30pm to 9.30pm (local time), is aimed at promoting awareness to fight against climate change.

On 28 March, 8TV, one of Malaysia’s leading media company alongside other Malaysians will be taking part in a global movement to stand united with 1000 cities and its people for Earth Hour by switching off non-essential lights for one hour (1 hour).

Earth Hour is an initiative started by World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF) in 2007 in Sydney, Australia. Last year, 50 million people across 35 countries took part in this movement. This year, WWF is targeting 1 billion people worldwide including individuals, government and corporations alike and WWF Malaysia is joining the ranks to lead Malaysians to be part of this global action.

Aside from pledging to promote and air commercials and promotions on Earth Hour, 8TV has also taken its first steps to help create and promote awareness amongst Malaysians by cutting down daily television broadcast transmission by one hour (1 hour) starting 1st of March 2009.

To make an even bigger impact and the first station in television history to do so, on 28 March from 8.30pm to 9.30pm, 8TV has also decided to stop the transmission of its television programme that also happens to be its peak prime-time hour.

8TV’s Chief Executive Officer, Encik Ahmad Izham comments, “8TV is honored to be part of such a momentous event. As a leading media company, and more importantly as citizens of the world, it is our responsibility to help raise awareness towards the need to take action against climate change,”

"8TV commits its heart and soul to the message of Earth Hour and will take its first step by reducing broadcasting time by one hour starting from the 1st of March 2009,”"And in support of Earth Hour 2009, for the first time ever in television broadcasting history, 8TV will shutdown television transmission from 8:30pm to 9:30pm on March 28,””This transmission shutdown, done during our peak prime-time hour, will send a strong message to all Malaysians about the need to slow down climate change, a global issue that affects us all,” We hope all Malaysians would come together and take that step to switch our lights off during Earth Hour,” adds Izham.

Apart from its one month on-air support, 8TV will also hold LIVE crossover at the main event that will be held at The KL Tower. 8TV’s hosts Qi, Marion and Owen Yap will serve as the main link between the viewers at home and the main event.

The first crossover is at 6.30pm, followed by the next one at 7.30pm and 8.29pm (30 sec countdown). The post event will then be aired on the 8TV Quickie at 11.30pm.
